£450 million energy innovation fund: is this the UK's time to shine?

Human ingenuity is our best hope of solving the climate crisis.

We've known this all along - but governments have been slow to throw their weight behind the innovation that's essential for a green future.

However, this week has seen some encouraging news.

The energy regulator Ofgem has opened a £450 million fund, one that seeks to "unlock greener ways to travel and to heat and power homes and businesses" through "harnessing a new approach to energy network innovation."

To take part in the scheme, organisations must team up with existing gas and electricity partners and apply for funding. Successful candidates must offer solutions in the following areas:

- Whole system integration
- Data and digitilisation
- Heat
- Transport

This is all part of the government's wider plan to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. And unleashing the creativity and ingenuity of British business is a key element of that strategy.

Commenting on the announcement, Andrew Griffith, UK Net Zero Business Champion, said: "UK businesses have proved time and time again that our country is home to world-leading entrepreneurial talent, innovators and disruptors. As we approach the COP26 Climate Change summit in Glasgow the Strategic Innovation Fund is an example of how business can provide the solutions that will make our energy cleaner and tackle climate change.”

At Awards International, we're firm believers in the power of innovation. It's raised our society to extraordinary heights - and it's what will build prosperity for future generations. That's why we launched the UK Business & Innovation Awards - to give proper recognition to the organisations, teams and individuals whose creativity and clear thinking leads the way.
